Progressive began in 1937 when Joseph Lewis and Jack Green launched Progressive Mutual Insurance Company to provide affordable auto insurance to all vehicle owners.

After 70 years in business, Progressive has evolved and grown, but our goal to provide affordable auto insurance remains the same.

Progressive's history of innovation reinforces our drive to provide easy insurance with superior protection at affordable prices. Our customer focus has helped us grow into one of the largest providers of both personal and commercial auto insurance.

Progressive makes auto insurance affordable

Progressive was the first auto insurance company to allow customers to pay their auto insurance premiums in installments—and that was more than 50 years ago! We realized that not everyone could pay for insurance in one up-front payment, so we provided flexible payment plans to accommodate our customers.

Today, we accept payments via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), check and credit card. We also offer a variety of payment plans starting at just 10 percent down to help keep your insurance premiums as affordable as possible.

Progressive provides commercial auto insurance

In 1971, as a response to the need for affordable small business insurance, Progressive expanded its insurance offerings to include commercial auto insurance.

After more than 40 years in the commercial auto insurance field, we continue to offer insurance coverage designed for the unique needs of both small and large businesses.

Superior insurance claims service

Accidents can be stressful, so Progressive continuously tries to make your experience with a car insurance claim faster, easier and less stressful. In fact, in the 1940s, one of the first services Progressive offered before any other auto insurance company was drive-in claims, allowing customers to drive their cars to one location for an estimate.

Here are a few other ways Progressive provides superior claims service:

  • In 1990, we introduced 24/7 claims service, giving customers personal service and support to report claims and get help at any time.
  • In 1994, Progressive extended its 24/7 claims service service to include the Immediate Response® Vehicle, a specially marked and outfitted vehicle that brings trained claims professionals to wherever customers need them — even to the scene of an accident.
  • In 2003, Progressive launched another industry first, our concierge level of claims service. Currently available to small business and personal auto insurance customers, with our concierge level of claims service, Progressive oversees all elements of the claims and repair process on behalf of drivers involved in accidents. Customers simply drop off their cars at a claims service center, located in select markets, and pick them up once the repairs are complete. Progressive takes care of everything in between.
  • In 2006, Progressive expanded its concierge level of claims service to address the special needs of drivers whose vehicles were totaled as the result of an accident. Our Total Loss Concierge service helps customers find a replacement vehicle at a competitive price — and helps them find financing, too.
