Progressive has supported truckers for over 50 years. In that time, we’ve grown to be the #1 commercial truck insurance company in America. We provide flexible coverage and payment options, free filings, specialized heavy truck claims service, discounts, and expert support.
We protect many types of trucks in all states, and we specialize in insuring:
Progressive provides state and federal filings for our commercial truck insurance customers. These filings prove to the government that you have sufficient coverage for your vehicle. After you purchase truck insurance and file authority, we can take care of the rest.
Our goal is to give you the best truck claims service in the market. Unlike many companies, we have a specialized team of 100% in-house adjusters who’ll manage your repairs from start to finish. We’ve also developed an extensive network of pre-approved repair shops that give our trucking customers priority status.
In addition to some of the common commercial auto coverages, Progressive offers truck-specific coverages tailored to your business.
TRUCK COVERAGES
Motor truck cargo insurance protects the goods you haul in a commercial truck. It covers loss or damage caused by accidents, theft, or other risks. It’s a good choice for truckers because it helps prevent financial losses and ensures cargo protection during transport.
Non-trucking liability insurance protects leased drivers when using their trucks for non-business purposes when not under dispatch. It provides financial protection in case of accidents during personal use.
Trailer interchange insurance is essential for many trucking companies or owner-operators who exchange or haul trailers owned by others. It protects against damages or losses to the trailer while in their care.
Heavy truck roadside assistance helps pay for the services you need to get back on the road after a breakdown, including towing, winching, battery jump-start, fuel delivery, locksmith services, and flat tire replacement for your truck and attached trailer.
General liability for truckers pays for injuries or property damage you cause as a result of business activities not directly related to operating your truck, such as incorrect product delivery resulting in a client’s loss.
Rental reimbursement with downtime can help pay for a replacement vehicle rental and lost income while your truck is being repaired. This coverage is beneficial for businesses that rely on their vehicles because it minimizes the financial impact of unexpected downtime.
In 2023, Progressive’s national average monthly cost for commercial for-hire truck insurance ranged from $767 for specialty truckers to $1,041 for other transportation truckers.‡‡ Remember, these averages aren’t necessarily what you’ll pay. Your rate will depend on various factors, including:
Customers who buy truck insurance from Progressive get competitive bill plans with low down payment options. They can also avoid interest on monthly installments because we don’t rely on outside premium financing.

The people covered under a commercial truck insurance policy can vary and are specified in the policy. Any employees that drive your trucks (in addition to yourself) are known as “permissive users” and must be listed on your policy.
Filings are usually completed within 48 hours of the request.
It depends. Coverage for the “personal use” of a commercial truck depends on whether the driver is operating under their own authority or leased to a motor carrier. If they’re operating under their own authority, they’re covered for all personal use under their policy. If they’re leased to a motor carrier, they’re usually covered for business use only, but they could get non-trucking liability insurance to cover their personal use.
Bobtail truck insurance is a coverage that protects your truck when it’s being driven without a trailer for a business purpose, like a trucker returning to their depot after dropping off a trailer.
